Finding out that you are pregnant is one of the most memorable moments in your life. The first few weeks are a time of tremendous excitement; and the 10 week dating scan can feel like a lifetime away. You are probably keen to have an early scan in pregnancy to take your first look at your developing baby. This early scan confirms you are pregnant, roughly shows how many weeks you are and if all looks well before you spread the good news. For this reason many moms book an early scan at Echo Amsterdam.
If you are pregnant, you generally get 5 ultrasounds covered by insurance: the early ultrasound, the term ultrasound, the 13-week ultrasound, the 20-week ultrasound and a growth/positioning ultrasound at 35 - 36wk. Additionally, we may refer you for additional ultrasounds to check, for example, the baby's growth or position. These medical ultrasounds are always covered by insurance. You can also choose if you want extra ultrasounds during your pregnancy. A 2D pre-echo you pay for yourself and costs around €50. When can I have the first ultrasound done?
You can have an early ultrasound as early as 6 weeks. This internal early ultrasound examines the embryo but also whether the pregnancy is in the right place in the uterus and whether it is a twin or multiple pregnancy. By the way, an early ultrasound at 7-8 weeks of pregnancy is more reliable than at 6 weeks because the baby's development is already much further along by then. Also keep in mind that if you do end up being a bit earlier pregnant than expected, you won't be able to see if the heart is beating yet since it doesn't start beating until 5+3 weeks.
How does an ultrasound work?
A pregnancy ultrasound scan sends sound waves through your womb to create a visual image of your baby, placenta, and uterus, as well as other pelvic organs. It allows us to gather valuable information about the progress of your pregnancy and the health of your unborn child. During the scan high-frequency sound waves are being transmitted through your womb that bounce off your baby. A computer then translates the echoing sounds into video images that reveal your baby's shape, position, and movements projected on the wall to allow you to visualise what’s happening inside you.
When is an internal ultrasound needed?
Before 10 weeks of gestation, a scan is usually performed internally as the pregnancy is not visible with a normal scan via your belly. It can also happen that an internal scan is indicated later in pregnancy. For example when it's needed to check if the placenta is inserted too close to the cervix.
Why is it important to have a full bladder at the ultrasound?
A full bladder will lift your uterus to make the pregnancy better visible when you do a scan from the abdomen. If you'll have an internal scan, an empty bladder is better.
What is a 3D/4D ultrasound?
Thanks to the wonders of newHD Live 4Dultrasound baby scan technology, you can now take a glimpse into the world of your unborn child. It gives you the chance to see your baby in minute detail and start bonding, even before he or she enters the world. You’ll get the chance to see your baby’s face in the tiniest detail, and you can also look at their delicate hands and feet.Watch them sleep peacefully, yawn, hiccup or wriggle around! It gives you the opportunity to meet your baby, and also provides reassurance that they are doing well and are in good health. You can also find out the gender, or choose to keep it a surprise.
The 3/4D ultrasound is best between 24 and 30 weeks. Your baby is then big enough to provide beautiful images and has enough subcutaneous fat to see who he or she looks like. If you would like to have a 3/4D ultrasound earlier or later in the pregnancy, you can always do so!
If you are pregnant with multiple births, a 3/4D ultrasound is best done as early in the pregnancy as possible, then the children can still be visualized together. There is no extra charge for this.
However, it always depends on the position of the baby how well everything can be visualized.
In the event of any noteworthy indicators, these will be reported to us and if necessary you will be referred for a follow-up.
When is the best time to have a 4D live baby scan?
The 3/4D ultrasound is best between24 and 30 weeks. Your baby is then big enough to provide beautiful images and has enough subcutaneous fat to see who he or she looks like. If you would like to have a 3/4D ultrasound earlier or later in the pregnancy, you can always do so!
